Some interesting facts about Kyrgyzstan

  • 80% of the country are mountains.
  • Climate differs from province to province, subtropical in South West = Fergana Valley.
  • 7 provinces (one is Bishkek, which is located in the very North of the country, one is Osh city and one is Osh region in the South of the country).
  • Kyrgyzstan has borders with Kazachstan, China, Tadzhikistan and Uzbekistan.

Population

  • The population has just exceeded 6 Million, 50% are female, 50% male.
  • 65 % of the population are Kyrgyz, another 25% are Uzbeks and Russian.
  • 29,3% are < 15 years of age
  • 65,4% are between 15 – 65
  • 5,3% are > 65
  • Life expectancy for people born now is 66 years for male and 74,2 for female.

Children

  • The fertility rate is double of that in Germany / Switzerland (> 3).
  • In 2016 Kyrgyzstan had 162 329 newborn (Switzerland 86.559 in 2015 – population similar to K.)
  • In 1951 the population in K. was 1,7 Million, it has more than tripled in 66 years.
  • In 2017 by Febr. 23 already 23 881 (452 newborn per day).
  • The mortality rate is high (UNICEF date 2009). Infant mortality is still high and this is one of the most sensitive indicators of the level of poverty in a given country

Society / Healthcare

  • The educational level is high. 99,52% of the adult population is literate.
  • The level of poverty is still high, in the rural population up to 50%.
  • Economic deterioration following independence.
  • Health Care Fundamental Reform 1996 – 2006 Manas National Health Care Reform Programme
  • 98% deliveries are in delivery hospitals!

Deaf/severely hearing impaired

  • Based on > 150.000 newborn p.a. statistically there should be around 150 children born severely hearing impaired / deaf p.a.
  • As there is no neonatal hearing screening reliable information is not available.
  • The question is, whether these children have a chance to attend school (mainstream is not an option).

Cochlear Implants — sponsored by Lehnhardt Foundation, Germany / Lehnhardt Akademie, Switzerland

  • We have now already 9 children with Nucleus Cochlear Implant in the country:
    • Ajdina, Bata, Jegor, Dastan, Tschyngyz, Bayaman, Ajmen, Maksat and Elnur.
  • Another 5 will get their CI March 2 / 3, 2017 : Aibek, Ainura, Nadira, Alina and Ailun.
