About: Elementary need of early intervention and treatment for hearing impaired children at preschool age
Coordinator and Co-Author: Dr. Gottfried Diller, Univ.Prof. and Dean em. of Pedagogical University Heidelberg, Germany
Sponsored by: Prof. Ernst Lehnhardt Foundation, Badenweiler, Germany

Module 1 – Newborn Hearing Screening (Peter Böttcher & Barbara Bogner)
this module deals with the questions where the neonatal hearing screening is performed, which methods are applied and which consequences it has when the baby is diagnosed as hearing impaired.

Module 2 – Detection of Hearing Loss and the Listening Environment (Barbara Bogner)
describes what is specific for early childhood hearing diagnostics and which methods have to be applied to optimize the provision of assistive devices and the environmental parameters.

Module 3 – Early provision of assistive hearing devices (Andrea Bohnert)
displays the possibilities of providing assistive devices to young children and what has to be taken into consideration when choosing the kind of device and the handling of technology.

Module 4: Family and psycho-pedagogical support Guido Lichtert (Ph.D)
talks about how parents and the social environment reacts to the first diagnosis of hearing impairment and how they can be supported by professionals to manage the situation adequately and at the same time with an empathic attitude towards the child.

Module 5: Supporting Language Development in Groups (Gisela Batliner)
demonstrates how the hearing development of children in these very young ages can be supported, how we need to talk to them in order to foster a natural acquisition of speech and which is the role of co-working pedagogic professionals in this process.

Module 6 – Hearing-impaired children with multiple disabilities (G. Diller)
addresses questions which occur when additional difficulties or disabilities – e.g. additional sensory impairments or syndromes – have to be taken into account during the intervention.

Module 7 – Bilingualism in hearing-impaired children (G. Diller)
discusses special needs and requirements for the rehabilitation of hearing impaired children who are raised bilingually as the family has a migration background.

Module 8 – Milestones in child development (Eulalia Juan Pastor)
summarizes how the development of a child aged between 0 – 3 years is proceeding in general, which differences in time and scale of development are “normal” and how observation of behaviour can help to assess the progress of the child.

Module 9 – Effective Inclusion (Andrew Broughton)
explains how elementary pedagogic furtherance for hearing impaired has to be applied in view of a strategic intent for inclusion. A checklist is offered to evaluate one’s own pedagogical praxis under inclusion aspects.
